The Winix 5500-2 air purifier is the new replacement for the original Winix 5500 air purifier. The Winix 5500-2 features 3-stage air cleaning, remote control, washable carbon filter and cleans up to 350 square feet. Expert ratings and reviews, customer reviews.
I have 6 of these Winix 5500-2 machines (out of 13 total air purification units). I purchased 2 units 5 years ago. The most recent purchase was 6 months ago.
This machine helps reduce my allergy symptoms and is a great value overall. But of course there are some (mostly minor) things that could be better.
Note that while it does have some carbon, I wouldn't rely on this machine for significant gas/odor removal; you need much more carbon to be effective for that.
The speed settings produce airflow rates of about: 35 (sleep), 70 (speed 1), 90 (speed 2), 125 (speed 3), and 250 (speed 4) CFM. The machine is very quiet on the first 3 speeds. I mainly use speed 3 (not relying on the sensor/auto setting), and go up to speed 4 when vacuuming, rearranging, or temporarily experiencing more allergens getting into the home.
Pros:
- It uses very little power at the first 3 speeds: 5.2 watts (speed 1), 7.6 watts (speed 2), 11.9 watts (speed 3), and 52 watts (speed 4).
- It is easy to maintain, and filters are readily available for a good price.
- The remote is handy. Note that one remote will operate any of the units.
Cons:
- On the high speed, it's loud and makes a whining noise in addition to the sound of air rushing.
- One of my units started making some extra motor noise after about a year, and another might be starting after about 3 years.
- It doesn't resume its power-on state after a power loss; you have to manually turn it back on.
- The PlasmaWave feature turns on by default whenever the unit is powered on. You have to separately turn it off if you don't want to use it.
- You can't turn off the PlasmaWave feature with the remote.
- The latest unit I purchased didn't include a remote.
- The light that indicates air quality is very bright. I feel it's too bright for a bedroom, despite auto-dimming when the room is dark. I cover it by draping a sock on top, but at home, I don't have any of these units in the bedroom. I wish I could disable that light entirely, as I don't rely on the sensor anyway.
Most of the cons are nitpicks, or just things to be aware of. Overall, I find this to be a great machine and a great value. That's why it became my default choice whenever I needed to add an air purifier.
You can find this for almost $100 cheaper on other sites. Customer service is helpful when you have a question prior to a purchase but non-existent once you purchase your order. Zero follow through to multiple inquiries. I’ll shop elsewhere next time I need to purchase in this category.
